Today, students in Mrs. Kelley's microbiology class and Mrs. Bitner's anatomy class skyped with Ms. Michaela Murphy, a microbiologist and immunologist, who is a PhD candidate in the Department of Pathology at the University of Utah.
Ms. Murphy is studying how gut microbiota affects the brain, specifically the immune system components of the brain. During her presentation to the class, Ms. Murphy explained her research, including graphs from completed studies and spectrometry images she took of cells and what she learned from those images.
This was a wonderful, free opportunity for our students to learn how professional scientists use the Scientific Method to solve problems! We appreciate the staff of our local Intermediate Unit sharing this resource with us!
Later this month students in Mrs. Kelley's genetics class will Skype with Ms. Susan Horan, a DNA Specialist in the Florence Science & Cold Case Unit at the Brooklyn, NY District Attorney's office. In her role, Ms. Horan helps prosecutors, detectives and investigators with cases involving DNA from the investigation stage through when they have a DNA analyst giving trial testimony.

This is an incredible achievement that opens doors to even more musical opportunities, including auditions for Region V Chorus and potentially All-State Chorus. We're so proud of their hard work and dedication!
