Below you will find local and national resources listed by topic. Some resources are websites with lots of information. Some are websites where you can correspond with others who are counselors or peers who are experiencing the same problem. Some are local support groups. Still others are help lines you can call.

Hotlines and Help Lines

Teen Central Teen Central is an Anonymous Help line web site for teens, by teens just like you! It was developed by experts in teen counseling and psychology and is professionally monitored to ensure safety. It is a password-protected, safe cyber-space for teens to work out their issues that is brought to you by KidsPeace, the leader in teen crisis counseling. Access to this site is directed at pre-teens, teens and young adults.

Mental Health help line (717)264-2916 or (866)593-8351- If you are feeling Stressed, Anxious, Depressed, Panicked, or Overwhelmed you can call the Mental Health help line. They can help you locate a counselor or find a different counselor if you feel like you need a change.

Suicide Hotline (800)932-4616 Sometimes it's hard to admit... that we need other people. Sometimes depression & suicidal thoughtscontain a component of upset & anger towards the world & the people in it. But the truth is, nothing can really substitute for human contact - we do need people. The truth is, just talking to someone, explaining, sharing, venting, being listened to, can often give us a temporary reprieve.

Teen Dating Abuse Hotline1-866-331-9474 Dating violence is a pattern of controlling behaviors that one partner uses to get power over the other. If you are worried that this may be happening in your relationship check out the website or call.

Child Abuse Hotline (800)932-0313 is available 24 hours to receive reports of suspected child abuse. Each call is answered by a trained intake specialist who will interview the caller to determine the most appropriate course of action. Actions include forwarding a report to a county agency for investigation as child abuse or general protective services, forwarding a report directly to law enforcement officials or refer the caller to local social services (such as counseling, financial aid and legal services).

Domestic Violence Hotline (800)799-7233 If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship and needs help or would like to speak with someone about services and options, FREE and CONFIDENTIAL help is available 24 hours a day in all 67 counties in Pennsylvania.

The Trevor help line (866)4-U-TREVOR. is the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention help line for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.The Trevor help line is a free and confidential service that offers hope and someone to talk to, 24/7. The Trevor help line's trained counselors will listen and understand without judgment.

National Runaway Hotline (800) RUN-AWAY/ (800) 786-2929 if you are a teenager who is thinking of running from home, if you have a friend who has run and is looking for help, or if you are a runaway ready to go home.

Student Assistance Program

Student Assistance Program (SAP) Every school district in Pennsylvania has a Student Assistance Program. Parents, teachers, and students may refer students who are in need of help. The Student Assistance Program provides support in school and also refers students to resources that can help in the community.

Grief Support

The Caring Place helps children ages birth to 18 and their families grieve. Families go to the caring place together, eat dinner together with all of the other grieving families then work together in groups (adults and children) to share and help each other through the loss of a loved one. There is no cost to participate. The Caring Place website also provides many brochures and other information on grief for those experiencing it and those who have a friend or family member who is grieving. There is a video on what to expect if you attend The Caring Place and many stories from children and adults who were helped by The Caring Place.

Dealing with grief is challenging, especially for children and teens. Drew's Hope is a free grief and loss support program offered each fall and spring for children, teens and their families. The seven session program is facilitated by counseling students and professors from Shippensburg University and is held on the campus of Shippensburg University. Each session includes a complimentary dinner, followed by separate support sessions for children, teens and adults.

SAMHSA Coping with Traumatic Events This website holds a wealth of information for: parents, students, teachers, first responders, caregivers, and first responders on coping with and helping others to cope with Violence and Traumatic Events.

Eating Disorders

Addiction

Alcoholics Anonymous Information and support for recovering alcoholics. Includes a search for local AA meetings. Hagerstown is the location of the closest group, more info. is available on the AA website.

Narcotics Anonymous Information and support for addicts, recovering addicts, and the friends or family of addicts. Local NA meetings are held at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro, more info. is available on the NA website.

Partnership for Drug Free Kids An organization dedicated to reducing teen substance abuse and helping families impacted by addiction.

Disability Services

AHEDD is a private, non-profit with a mission to serve the community as a catalyst in the employment and development of persons with a disability.

Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR) is the Pennsylvania Office of Vocational Rehabilitation, a State Agency that helps persons with disabilities help themselves to prepare for, start, and maintain a career. OVR has fifteen offices located around the State with over 400 professional vocational rehabilitation counselors. These counselors work every year with thousands of persons who have physical, mental, and emotional disabilities.
