Re:       Redefining the District’s Elementary School Attendance Zones

The Waynesboro Area School District (WASD) Board of Directors had directed the school administration to explore the possibility of redefining or redistricting the elementary school attendance zones.  Essentially the WASD will devise a plan for balancing attendance zones, so students can attend the school closest to where they live.

Within that plan, the current attendance zones will change.  As a result, a child may attend one school now but possibly attend another school in the future.  Not all students will be impacted. However, please understand, if the Board approves this plan, it will not go into effect until the 2020/21 school year.

WASD hired a professional transportation company called Orbit to build the plan.  The purpose is to provide a safer and more efficient transportation system.  Additionally, WASD wishes to have students attend the school closest to where they live.

WASD Communication Team will be providing a survey for parents and staff to respond to questions in order to help the district to address questions and concerns.  Please expect more communication throughout the process.

This memorandum is to communicate to you that WASD is exploring this possibility, and wanting to keep you informed as we proceed on this project.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Redistricting of Elementary School Attendance Zones

FAQs

November 27, 2018

Background

The WASD School Board gave the district administration (date) the directive to explore and propose a plan for redistricting elementary school attendance zones.

What is it?

Redistricting elementary school attendance zones is the process for looking at balancing school student capacities by looking at where students live in relationship to a school building.

Why is WASD Exploring This?

WASD, over the years, has moved students to different elementary schools for reasons overcapacity, specific programming, and other reasons.  These situations prevented some students from attending their home area’s school and bussed to another school with space.  Due to other district practices, students are shuttled from building to building due to parental requests.  Unfortunately, with the large amount of transportation situations, there have been countless safety concerns and a lack of efficiency.  With those concerns, the school board wished to look at ways to remedy the issues.

When Will This Happen?

The school board agreed that if a plan would be approved it would not go into effect until the 2020/21 school year.  When a plan is ready, the Board will review it, seek input and vote whether to move forward or not.

How Will a Plan be Prepared?

The WASD School Board approved the transportation services of Orbit Software, Inc. to consult with the WASD on the plan.  Orbit will have WASD gather the specific information and data, and will use the information to devise a plan.

How Will I Know What Is Going to Happen?

There will be periodic updates provided for parents, guardians and the community in order to help everyone understand any progress with the process.  In addition, the website will also be a good place for reviewing ongoing progress.

Anything Else?

The WASD Communication Team will be deploying surveys to parents and staff to acquire feedback of concerns and questions.  Therefore, with that information, WASD will try to answer and address any of those concerns and questions.
